Professional Conducting Mentorship
I tailor my mentoring to the unique needs of each student and take a holistic approach to coaching, making sure students feel supported, understood and motivated to progress. I am increasingly engaged for one to one sustained choral conducting mentoring and am currently working with students, in person or remotely, in Australia, America, Ireland, Malta and the UK. If you’d like to improve your skills or work towards one of three levels of ABRSM diploma in Music Direction, then do get in touch to see how my mentoring package can support you.
I studied orchestral conducting with John Longstaff at Huddersfield University, and choral conducting with Peter Broadbent, Therees Tcak-Hibbard, Jo McNally and Dr John Dickson. I hold a DMA in Choral Conducting from Texas Tech University, USA, am the most recent Director of Training for the Association of British Choral Directors and am regularly invited to present at Choral Festivals and Events in the UK and Europe.
You can learn from me on The Art of Choral Direction course at the annual Sherborne Summer School, Dorset, and on the Vocal Elevation retreat at Benslow Music, Hertfordshire. Teachers, students and emerging professional conductors often seek me out - either privately, at one of my masterclasses or on a choral course - to bridge any gaps in their training, and to learn new ways of thinking about, and developing, their choral leadership skills.
“I had the privilege of being a student of Dr. Amy Bebbington during a key part of my choral conducting education. I sought her out because her positive reputation preceded her and I was not disappointed. Amy is an outstanding teacher of choral conducting: her friendly, welcoming and genuine demeanour is key to her success. She has an engaging, energetic and enthusiastic manner, communicates clearly in her teaching, models exceptionally well, and makes you feel calm and at ease. She is able to help you develop effective and efficient gestural technique and improve your communication as a conductor. Amy helped me achieve an FRSM in Choral Conducting, and under her tutelage I was able to gain a scholarship at a highly prestigious university in the United States to study choral conducting with one of US’s most sought-after teachers. Dr Bebbington has literally changed the course of my career through her teaching and unwavering support. I wholeheartedly recommend her.”
“My conducting and singing lessons with Amy are honestly the highlight of my week. Amy’s enthusiasm and expertise is second to none & I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. Even after a few lessons, I have heard a difference in my voice, which I am thrilled about! Amy has given me some excellent tips and ideas to use with my own choirs & has really helped me improve my conducting technique. I can’t recommend Amy enough; she is an outstanding teacher and a really lovely person!”
“Amy is the best kind of teacher, tailoring each lesson to what I need to focus on most. She has such a wealth of knowledge and experience; each session I am inspired anew to improve and grow as a choral conductor. ”
“My time learning from Amy has been musically inspirational, practically beneficial, and deeply empowering. She was genuinely interested in my career development and adding to my skill set. Her guidance led me to understand my conducting and teaching in more efficient and effective ways. I found great value in unpacking my rehearsals after Amy was able to observe in real-time, including offering tactics and exercises to help my singers further along.
Amy was generous in sharing her insights and experiences as both conductor and composer, providing support and encouragement. When I had self-doubt, she led me to see things in a different light. Amy’s wide knowledge of choral conducting resources and recommendations of repertoire are always expertly given. One mentoring session focussed on deconstructing a larger choral/instrumental work including score marking preparation. I welcomed her keen understanding of this repertoire and now have much more confidence to see it through to performance with authenticity and agency! I highly recommend Amy as a conducting mentor! ”
“Before working with Amy, I had learned to conduct solely through group classes and workshops, but in a short time, she has identified both my strengths and weaknesses and tailored her training accordingly. Amy’s teaching has introduced a depth of nuance and increased my technical focus in conducting, opening up a much broader range of musical opportunities. This is truly next-level stuff.”
“Your support has been invaluable to me and every element of our sessions has contributed in a huge way to my confidence and ability as a choral conductor.”
